HC Deb 04 February 1983 vol 36 cc223-4W
Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether he will take steps to assist those industries in Leicester which are labour-intensive.

Mr. MacGregor

Firms in Leicester are already eligible for assistance under many national schemes for projects which meet the necessary criteria. Since May 1979, to give one example, 110 companies have been offered assistance under section 8 of the Industrial Development Act 1982 amounting to over £993,000 on

projects costing £5,877,000. However, the best prospects for industry in Leicester, and elsewhere, continue to lie in the efforts of firms to regain their competitiveness, which the Government's overall economic policies are encouraging.
