HC Deb 03 February 1983 vol 36 c163W
41. Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons had been on remand in custody for more than 110 days at the latest available date.

Mr. Mellor

Information in the form requested could be provided only at disproportionate cost. It is estimated that on 30 November 1982, in prison department establishments in England and Wales there were about 1,100 persons on remand awaiting trial and more than 300 convicted persons awaiting sentence whose date of initial remand into custody was more than 110 days earlier. This period includes any time spent on bail after the initial remand in custody and may involve consecutive periods on remand resulting from different charges.
