§ Mr. Kenneth Clarke[pursuant to his reply, 19 December 1983]: The estimated amount paid to nurses and midwives in England in 1982–83 was £2.3 billion; the estimated average hours per week worked by full-time staff was 37.8; and the estimated hourly rate of pay—calculated on basic pay, excluding all allowances—was £2.61.
