HC Deb 20 December 1983 vol 51 c130W
Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what correspondence his Department has had with Mr. Robert Chamley about matters related to a British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. plant in Lancashire.

Mr. Giles Shaw

My Department has had no correspondence with Mr. Chamley.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the basis on which British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. made ex-gratia payments to Mr. Robert Chamley, a farmer in the vicinity of a British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. plant in Lancashire.

Mr. Giles Shaw

308 square yards of land on Mr. Chamley's farm were slightly contaminated in May 1980 as a result of an incorrectly replaced inspection cover on an effluent line. The contamination would have added about 2 per cent. to background radiation. BNFL replaced the contaminated turf and topsoil. BNFL has made an exgratia payment of £500 to Mr.Chamley for the inconvenience caused.

Mr.Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list all ex-gratia payments made by I3ritish Nuclear Fuels Ltd. to farmers who have lost sheep in mysterious circumstances in the vicinity of British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. plants.

Mr. Giles Shaw

No ex-gratia payments have ever been made by BNFL to farmers for the loss of sheep in mysterious circumstances. A payment of £47 was made in November 1982 to compensate for the loss of a sheep which died after falling down an inspection pit near Sellafield.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he will list the occasions since 1979 on which the Health and Safety Executive has not notified the Department of Energy of radioactive waste material leaks from British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. plants; and what were the reasons for not doing so in each case.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Arrangements for reporting nuclear incidents were introduced by the then Secretary of State in February 1977. The criteria were set out in the Health and Safety Executives's first quarterly statement which was placed in the Library of the House. Revised reporting procedures were announced by my hon. Friend the Member for Croydon, Central (Mr. Moore) in his statement of 26 July 1982. A note of the revised criteria was also placed in the Library of the House.
