HC Deb 20 December 1983 vol 51 c201W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the use of lay adjudicators in claim assessments for the mobility allowance, the constant attendance allowance and the housewives' non-contributory invalidity pension.

Mr. Newton

In the light of comments from interested organisations we will be considering the recommendations in the report by Mr. P. R. Oglesby on the greater use of lay adjudicators in mobility allowance cases and on a further study to evaluate the practicability of lay adjudication in attendance allowance cases. Consideration of these questions will necessarily take a little time. Housewives' non-contributory invalidity pension already has a system of lay adjudication.
