Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much aid was provided to overseas students in 1983 on the Foreign Office Vote; and from which countries those students come.

Detailed returns of expenditure in 1983 are not yet available but assistance to students and trainees under the programmes of the Overseas Development Administration is expected to exceed £45 million. Other programmes for which the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is responsible are expected to cost over £6 million. In addition, the British Council runs its own scholarship scheme from resources provided by the FCO, which is expected to account for nearly £3 million.
