§ Dr. Marekasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how the areas of priority are being determined in the proposed cuts in agricultural research in Wales.
§ Mr. BrookeAs far as agricultural research funded through the Department's science budget is concerned, priorities are determined at national level by the Agricultural and Food Research Council and at local level by the directors of the institutes and units funded by the council. In recent years the Welsh Plant Breeding Station has diversified its activities to include, for instance, agronomic work on hill and upland pastures. Much of its work will continue, though I understand there are plans to cut back on developmental genetics, chemistry and spring barley breeding.
