HC Deb 13 December 1983 vol 50 c386W
Sir Hector Monro

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will mount a campaign to prevent drivers using bad weather bright rear lights in good visibility.

Mrs. Chalker

The Department already undertakes publicity to encourage the correct use of rear fog lamps and a new rule 111A on this subject has recently been introduced into the "Highway Code".

I will continue to do all I can to bring this problem to public attention within the limits of the many competing claims on our publicity funds.

Sir Hector Monro

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will introduce measures to reduce the intensity of bright rear lights, for use in bad weather, in order to reduce dazzle to following drivers in good visibility.

Mrs. Chalker

No. Rear fog lamps must necessarily be very bright to penetrate when visibility is seriously reduced by fog or similar conditions. They should not be used in good visibility, and we shall continue to remind motorists of this.
