HC Deb 13 December 1983 vol 50 cc390-1W
Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Attorney-General if he will list the responsibilities within his Department of the Treasury Solicitor.

The Solicitor-General

The Treasury Solicitor's Department does not form part of the Law Officers' Department but is a separate Department for which the Attorney-General answers in the House.

The main functions of the Treasury Solicitor are, in England and Wales, as follows:

  1. (a) to provide legal advice to the Treasury and other Government Departments, such as the Departments of Energy, Transport and Education, and the Ministry of Defence, which do not have separate legal advisers of their own;
  2. (b) to conduct civil litigation, including that in the European Court, on behalf of most Government Departments;
  3. (c) to provide a conveyancing service for all Government Departments;
  4. (d) to collect bona vacantia on behalf of the Crown;
  5. (e) to manage the Statutory Publications Office.
