HC Deb 13 December 1983 vol 50 cc439-40W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many fatalities related to solvent abuse, inhalation of toxic chemicals and so on have been recorded in (a) the Houghton and Washington constituency, (b) Sunderland borough and (c) the north-east of England.

Mr. John Patten

Exact figures of deaths associated with solvent abuse are not available, but since 1971 one death in Sunderland Metropolitan District and 14 deaths elsewhere in the north-east of England —Northumberland, Durham, Cleveland and Tyne and Wear —may have involved solvent abuse. Information is not available for parliamentary constituencies.
