HC Deb 12 December 1983 vol 50 c335W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Under-Secretary of State answering in respect of the Arts how much of the £32 million to which he referred in his reply to the hon. Member for Newham, North-West, Official Report, 7 November, c.2, is represented by expenditure by the City of London on the Barbican.

Mr. Waldegrave

This information is not held centrally but budget estimates for expenditure on the arts by local authorities published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy show that in 1982–83 the City of London planned to spend about £24.5 million net on arts centres and halls used mainly for arts purposes; £14,000 net on theatres, performances and public entertainment; and under £1.4 million net on art galleries and museums. The statistics do not identify how much is attributable to such facilities at the Barbican.
