asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners have been in prison one or more times a year during the past five years.

Mr. Mellor

[pursuant to his reply, 15 April, c. 464]: The only information which can be made available without disproportionate cost relates to 1981. In that year the 93,000 receptions into prison department establishments in England and Wales of sentenced prisoners and non-criminal prisoners related to about 88,000 individual persons.
