HC Deb 26 April 1983 vol 41 c281W
Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if it is the practice of the Metropolitan police to attend court when a complainant is being charged arising out of the circumstances in which he made the complaint.

Mr. Mayhew

When criminal proceedings are brought by the police, they are represented by the appropriate officers or members of the solicitor's department. Where the defendant has made a formal complaint it is not the normal practice in the Metropolitan police for the investigating officer to attend court. This is, however, a matter for the judgment of the investigating officer in the particular circumstances of the case.
