HC Deb 26 April 1983 vol 41 c284W
Mr. Heddle

asked the Minister for Trade what steps he takes to ensure that safety measures on imported goods comply with British standards institution standards.

Dr. Vaughan

[pursuant to the reply 25 April, c. 231]: I assume my hon. Friend is referring to the safety of consumer goods. Many safety regulations under the consumer safety legislation require that goods supplied or possessed for supply should comply with British standards whether imported or manufactured here. These regulations are enforced by local authorities. I am currently reviewing the effectiveness of the legislation, including its application to imported products and the use which it makes of British standards. I hope to announce proposals before long.
