HL Deb 26 April 1983 vol 441 c915WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What arrangements are made in the event of a chief constable showing symptoms of mental instability.

Lord Elton

This is a matter in the first instance for the police authority, which would be expected to seek medical advice. If necessary, a chief constable may be called on to retire on grounds of ill health or in the interests of efficiency.
