HC Deb 28 October 1982 vol 29 cc520-1W
11. Mr. Dobson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he proposes to make any changes in his fiscal, monetary and expenditure policies with the intention of reducing unemployment.

Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the continuing increase in unemployment, he will take further steps to stimulate demand.

Mr. Brittan

The Government are already pursuing., and intend to maintain, the responsible and balanced fiscal, monetary and supply policies which offer the best prospect for sustainable job opportunities.

27. Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will take steps to assess the effect of fiscal measures on the level of unemployment, before such measures are implemented.

Mr. Brittan

The Government's policy is to create the conditions for a sustained rise in output and employment. Monetary and fiscal policies are directed to this end.

36. Mr. Woolmer

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he expects his economic policies to result in a reduction of unemployment in West Yorkshire.

43. Mr. Foster

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he expects his economic policies to result in a reduction of unemployment in the North of England.

Mr. Brittan

It has never been the practice of this, or any previous, Government to publish unemployment forecasts. Prospects for a fall in unemployment in all regions will be brighter, the sooner greater responsibility is restored to wage bargaining and the competitiveness of British industry is improved.
