asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the key factors which influence his policy towards the exchange rate.

Mr. Wakeham

The Government do not have a policy of attempting to determine the value of the exchange rate, which is largely determined by the balance of market forces. The exchange rate is, of course, one of the indicators taken into account when setting interest rates.
