asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Basildon of 22 October,Official Report, c. 225, which four police authorities have had their requests for increased police establishments approved; which request is still under consideration; and if he will make a statement.

Of the requests from the five undermentioned police authorities for increases in their police establishments in 1982–83, approval has been given to three additional posts in Gwent, three in Leicestershire and seven in Thames Valley, all of them for complaints and discipline departments. Hertfordshire police authority has been informed that we are prepared to approve six additional constable posts; and the application from Dorset police authority for 18 additional posts is still under consideration.
