asked the Secretary of State for Industry what percentage of Japanese new investment in the European Economic Community was made in the United Kingdom in the most recent 12-month period.

The April 1982 edition of theJapan Balance of Payments Monthlyrecords that 12 per cent. of Japanese direct investment in the European Community was invested in the United Kingdom in 1981. The percentage in 1980 was 42.4. The European Community includes, until 1980, the nine continental members (excluding Greece). 1981 percentage includes Greece.

Footnotes:Direct investment covers purchases net of disposals of share capital and long term loans by Japanese concerns in the overseas subsidiaries, associates and branches. Unremitted profits, short-term loans or trade credit are not included.
