§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Transport if, in view of the growing number of deaf drivers, he will take steps to introduce a scheme providing for some system whereby in the rear and front windscreen a clear notice to this effect is exhibited to advise 548W overtaking and approaching motorists of the fact that the driver of the vehicle in front or behind them is unable to hear their warning signals.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThere is no evidence to suggest that deaf drivers are involved in any more accidents, or are any more at risk on the road than those with normal hearing. If the hon. Member has a specific suggestion to make, I shall be pleased to investigate his idea with the RNID, and others. There is no evidence that hearing plays more than a very limited pan: in driving consideration, whilst visual perception is of course crucial.
