HC Deb 30 November 1982 vol 33 c161W
Mr. Rippon

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total number of people working in Somerset House; how much space in Somerset House is taken up by the storage of files, books, legal records and unwanted furniture; and what is the total working space available per head of the work force.

Sir George Young

Approximately 1,200 nonindustrial staff work in Somerset House. No information is readily available on the space taken up by the storage of files, books, legal records and unwanted furniture. However over 135,000 sq ft of the building is classified as storage space and used as such. Somerset House contains approximately 150 sq ft of office space for each non-industrial worker.
