HC Deb 24 November 1982 vol 32 c522W
Mr. Penhaligon

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if his Department will seek to test the efficacy of road signs at intersections by identifying the proportion of drivers involved in accidents who are unfamiliar with the site and rely solely on the signs for advance warning on the approach to the intersection.

Mrs. Chalker

An investigation of junction accidents has already been made as part of a broader study of accidents. The investigation recorded that about 8 per cent. of drivers involved in junction accidents were not familiar with the site and that there were many other contributory factors. There do not seem to be grounds for amendment of the Department's criteria for the signing of junctions as given in the traffic signs manual at present. If the hon. Member is concerned about a specific junction, I hope he will write to me with details.
