asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the total cost since 1979 of each of the programmes for temporary employment.

The following table details the outturn on each of the special employment measures in each of the financial years since 1979.

Notes

* The temporary employment subsidy closed for applications on 31 March 1979. Payments continued to 30 March 1980.

† The small firms employment subsidy closed for applications on 31 March 1980.

‡ The programme closed for applications in March 1978. Finance has been allocated in succeeding financial years to deal with residual work.

[...] The adult employment subsidy closed for applications on 30 June 1979.

The special temporary employment subsidy was superseded on 1 April 1981 by the community enterprise programme.
