HC Deb 11 November 1982 vol 31 cc247-8W
Mr. Douglas

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the inter-relationship of personal taxation and social security benefits and the effects on personal incentives.

Mr. Ridley

These matters are examined in detail in the memorandum submitted by the Government in May this year to the Sub-Committee of the Select Committee on the Treasury and Civil Service which is conducting an inquiry into the structure of personal income taxation and income support (House of Commons paper 331-IV). The concern for incentives underlies the Government's commitment to reduce the burden of personal taxation when circumstances permit.
