§ Dr. Summerskillasked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will introduce legislation to bring the Equal Pay Act 1970 into line with the Treaty of Rome, by amending it to provide for equal pay for work of equal value;
(2) if he will ensure that amendments to the Equal Pay Act following the recent decision of the Court of Justice are made by way of an amending Bill and not by way of statutory instrument.
§ Mr. AlisonWe intend to introduce legislation to amend the Equal Pay Act in the current Session of Parliament, in the light of the recent European Court judgment. The amendment will be made by means of an order under section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972.
