HC Deb 11 November 1982 vol 31 cc219-20W
Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many staff in each rank in the Home Office are exclusively concerned with the Home Secretary's role as police authority for the Metropolis.

Mr. Whitelaw

The resource and organisational aspects of my responsibilities as police authority for the Metropolis are the exclusive concern of a higher executive officer and occupy the major part of the time of a principal and an executive officer. However the Police Department is organised on a functional basis and all its officials are available to advise me on the Metropolitan Police, according to the subject under consideration. The co-ordination of this advice is under the direction of a deputy under secretary of state, supported by an assistant under secretary of state for a major part of his time.
