Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of school leavers had no academic qualifications at all in the latest year for which figures are available; and what has been the trend in this figure since 1945.

11.4 per cent. of school leavers in England in 1980–81 had no graded CSE or GCE examination result. This proportion has decreased steadily over the years with particularly large decreases after the introduction of the CSE examinations in 1965 and after the school leaving age was raised in 1973.
