Mr. Ronald W. Brownasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what requirements, analogous to those binding on industrial premises generally under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act and the Factories Acts, apply to industrial undertakings in Her Majesty's prisons; and what steps are taken internally to ensure that these requirements are met.
§ Mr. MayhewPeople employed in prison department establishments benefit from the protection of the Acts, and the staff have the same obligations as in outside industrial undertakings and are similarly liable to legal proceedings if they fail to fulfil them. Qualified safety officers and safety representatives function in prison workshops much as they do in outside industries, and prison workshops are subject to inspections including inspections by officers of the Health and Safety Executive.
