HC Deb 22 June 1982 vol 26 c55W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will seek to ensure that mentally and physically handicapped children receive improvements in the type of education that will benefit them most, particularly amongst the age group between 16 and 19 years.

Dr. Boyson

The new assessment procedures which will follow the implementation of the Education Act 1981 should help to ensure the best possible match between a pupil's special educational needs and the provision to meet these needs. They will also help to ensure that attention is given to the preparation of young people for the transition to adult life in their final years at school.

The Government have also emphasised in the White Paper "Special Needs in Education"—Cmnd. 7996—presented to Parliament in August 1980, the need for the handicapped of this age to have the widest possible choice of avenues for continued education and training in accordance with their aptitudes whether at school, in further education or elsewhere; and for local authorities and others to co-operate closely to this end.
