Pay and Allowances of Parliamentarians in EEC and in other Countries (10 June 1982) EEC Countries Basic Annual Salary Special Allowances and Concessions Secretarial and Office Services Travel Concessions (on Parliamentary Business) Postage and Telephone Services (on Parliamentary Business) United Kingdom £13,950 Subsistence Allowance of up to £5,206 pa when Member has to stay away from home. Allowance of £759 for Members representing London constituencies. Severance arrangements. Allowance of up to £8,480 for secretarial or research assistance and office expenses, plus £848 to provide pensions for Members employees. Repayment of fare or car mileage allowance at 22.3p per mile for all journeys throughout the United Kingdom. Limited free travel for spouses. Free stationery. Free Inland Telephone and postal service from Parliament. Belgium BF1,664,957 (£20,708) Two-thirds of this is free of tax Family allowances for all children under 25. Allowances are equivalent to those of Belgian civil servants. Special indemnity paid at each new birth. Insurance cover against accidents and sickness incurred both at home and on duty. Each parliamentarian is paid an allowance to employ one or two secretaries. A free pass is provided for all transport. A special allowance is paid for those Deputies who use their cars and this is calculated on the basis of BF3 (2.4p) per kilometre for 120 return journeys from the Chamber to the home. All Deputies are entitled to 1000 stamped envelopes at BF9 (7.2p) per stamp, 500 pieces of writing paper and 500 envelopes per month.
