Miss Joan Lestor

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, pursuant to the reply of 6 April, Official Report, c. 292–3, to the hon. Member for Eton and Slough, whether he has now met the chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commission; what matters were discussed; whether he proposes to take any action; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waldegrave

My right hon. Friend and met the chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commission on 28 April. We discussed the commission's proposal that universities should consider mounting conversion courses to enable women with arts A-levels to equip themselves for entry to courses in science and technology. My right hon. Friend advised that this useful proposal was for consideration by individual universities in consultation as appropriate with the University Grants Committee. He has no plans for any further action.
