Mr. Pendry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will list job losses in the shipbuilding, heavy engineering, textiles, motor manufacturing, coal mining, construction, agriculture and fisheries industries, respectively, for each year since May 1979; and what was the total number of manufacturing jobs lost in each year;

(2) if he will list the total number of jobs lost in each region of the United Kingdom in each year since May 1979.

NB Unless otherwise stated the figures relate to the Wolverhampton travel to work area which consists of Wolverhampton, Bilston, Tipton, Dudley, Kingswinsford, Cradley Heath and Wednesfield.

Notes:

  1. 1. The figure constitutes the number of potentially redundant jobs for which reimbursement for support was claimed in June 1982.
  2. 2. The figure represents the number of entrants in 1981–82 in the area administered from the Wolverhampton No. 1 area office of the special programmes division of the Manpower Services Commission. The regional figure relates to the Wolverhampton,—2 offices—Birmingham and Coventry offices.
  3. 3. The figures represent the number of filled places at the end of June in the employment services division area administered from the Wednesfield jobcentre.
  4. 4. The figures are for the West Midlands employment services division region.
  5. 5. There is at present no "unit" in Wolverhampton. The figure for the West Midlands as a whole is divided between Birmingham—147—and Coventry—95.
  6. 6. The figures are for the total number of applications approved since the start of the scheme in January 1982.
  7. 7. The figure given is for the Midlands region as figures for the West Midlands are not kept and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.
