§ Mr. Steenasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will consider, in co-operation with Merseyside county council, the extent to which retail trade, leisure and tourism activity in the area would be stimulated by a reduction in the number of traffic ordinances and a liberalisation of the traffic régime.
§ Mr. HeseltineTraffic regulation in Merseyside is strictly the responsibility of the county council. I will, however, arrange that the matter raised by my hon. Friend is discussed with the local authorities in the context of the various initiatives being pursued by the Merseyside task force.
