§ Miss Richardsonasked the Secretary of State for Defence what facilities are available in the United Kingdom, and in what location, in respect of the following: (a) the manufacture of fuel rods for British nuclear powered submarines; (b) the loading of fuel rods into nuclear powered submarines; (c) the unloading of spent fuel from nuclear powered submarines; (d) the transport of spent fuel rods from nuclear powered submarines between naval bases and reprocessing facilities and (e) the reprocessing of spent fuel rods from nuclear powered submarines.

(a) At Rolls-Royce Limited, Derby.(b) and (c) At Vickers Armstrong at Barrow in Furness for (b); and for (b) and (c) at Her Majesty's Dockyards at Devonport, Chatham and Rosyth.(d) It is transported in specially designed containers from the dockyard concerned to the British Nuclear Fuels Limited plant at Sellafield in Cumbria, where it goes into storage.(e) None, at present.
