HC Deb 18 January 1982 vol 16 cc10-1W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will set up a comprehensive inquiry into the use of computers by the police; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mayhew

Police forces use computers for administrative and operational purposes. Both uses have been approached with care. Special care has been applied where processes connected with police operations have been converted from manual to electronic form. Such uses have usually been developed through pilot schemes undertaken jointly by the Home Office and police forces. These schemes and their development more widely in the police service have been reported to Parliament in successive annual reports by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary. The Home Office continues to keep in close touch with chief officers of police about the use of computers. Chief officers are well aware of the need to balance gains in police efficiency and effectiveness with safeguards for individuals. We see no need for an inquiry.
