HC Deb 24 February 1982 vol 18 c386W
Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners died in Brixton prison in 1981; in how many cases an inquest was held, with what verdict; and how many cases of attempted suicide were recorded.

Mr. Mayhew

There were five deaths in Brixton pri; on during 1981. The coroner is required to hold an inquest with a jury on any death which occurs in a prison department establishment. In these cases three verdicts of suicide and two verdicts of death by natural causes were recorded. In addition there were 13 incidents, involving a total of 11 prisoners, where a prisoner injured himself apparently with suicidal intent.
