HC Deb 18 February 1982 vol 18 c175W
Mr. Stainton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will quantify or otherwise indicate the importance to United Kingdom exporters to Japan of that country's recently announced package for easing import procedures on 67 trade items.

Mr. Biffen

As part of their recently outlined import measures, the Japanese Government have announced that they intend to remove at least 67 non-tariff barriers to imports into Japan relating to standards, testing, and import procedures. It will not be possible to assess accurately the practical effects on exports to Japan until the extent and method of implementation are known. Removal of these barriers is a step in the right direction, but I made it clear to the Japanese Government earlier this month that much more needs to be done by Japan to open up its market to exports of manufactured goods.
