asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will list the members of the Monopolies Commission and their remuneration together with their outside occupations or other Government appointments; and on what date each of them was first appointed.

The chairman's appointment is full time and pensionable; his salary is £35,000 a year. The two deputy chairmen are appointed on the basis that on average they devote two and a half days a week to commission business; their equivalent full-time pensionable salary is £26,216 a year. The ordinary members are appointed on the basis of one and a half days a week, on average, to commission business; they receive £5,421 a year and there is no pension entitlement.

Members hold a wide variety of other executive and non-executive appointments. Ten have direct industrial or commercial experience. In addition, there are four economists; three lawyers; three trade unionists; one chartered accountant; one management consultant; one educationalist; one former senior civil servant and one member from the consumer movement.

All members are required to declare any possible conflict of interest before they are appointed to an investigatory team.
