Mr. Onslowasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will take steps to alert adoptive parents to the need to advise his Department of the new name of an adopted child before first registration for national insurance in order to avoid notification of the national insurance number in the child's previous surname.
§ Mrs. ChalkerYes, Sir. We are arranging for a letter to be sent to those child benefit payees whose surname is recorded as differing from the child's. We also intend to include advice in the memorandum to adopters. I very much regret the embarrassment and distress which was recently caused to some parents by the issue of national insurance number cards to their children in the wrong name.
