HC Deb 22 December 1982 vol 34 cc574-5W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of public expenditure in 1979–80 was taken up by wages and salaries; and what is the forecast figure for the current year.

Mr. Brittan

In 1979–80 wages and salaries accounted for 32 per cent. of the public expenditure planning total. In the plans for 1982–83 given in "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1982–83 to 1984–85"—Cmnd. 8494, table 1.10—wages and salaries accounted for 31 per cent. of the planning total.
