HC Deb 06 December 1982 vol 33 cc425-6W
Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many redundancies in Glasgow have been notified to the Manpower Services Commission since May 1979; and how many firms were involved.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

There are no comprehensive statistics of redundancies. Between 1 May 1979 and 31 August 1982, the latest date for which information is available, 949 instances of redundancy involving 10 or more workers were notified to the Manpower Services Commission as due to occur in the Glasgow travel-to-work area, with the loss of 47,899 jobs. It is not possible to say how many individual firms were involved, since some may have declared more than one redundancy during the period.
