HC Deb 06 December 1982 vol 33 c425W
Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the net number of jobs lost in Glasgow since May 1979 in the industrial sectors in (a) manufacturing and (b) construction.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Net manufacturing employment in the city of Glasgow district is estimated to have declined by about 19,700 between mid-1979 and mid-1981, the latest date for which such information is available. This estimate is based on the Scottish manufacturing establishments record which relates to units with 11 or more employees. Comparable estimates for construction are not available.

Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many companies have closed down in Glasgow since May 1979; and how many jobs have been lost as a result.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

There are no comprehensive statistics of closures. Between 1 May 1979 and 31 August 1982, the latest date for which information is available, 218 instances of redundancy involving 10 or more workers and resulting in closure were notified to the Manpower Services Commission as due to occur in the Glasgow travel-to-work area, with the loss of 14,692 jobs.
