HC Deb 03 December 1982 vol 33 c311W
Mr. Wrigglesworth

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what terms and conditions will apply to staff leaving institutions as a result of the closure of teacher training courses.

Mr. Waldegrave

All staff made redundant qualify for statutory minimum redundancy payments, subject to the normal rules concerning redundancy payments. In addition, redundant teaching staff aged 50 and over are eligible for premature retirement terms, providing for immediate payment of accrued superannuation benefits, which may be enhanced at the employer's discretion. Premature retirement compensation is not available to redundant teachers under the age of 50, but on 4 November my right hon. Friend announced new arrangements which will allow employers to pay to redundant teachers aged 41 to 49 in advanced further education lump-sum compensation above statutory minimum levels. Those arrangements will run until 31 August 1985 and will be at employers' discretion; the maximum enhancement will depend on age and service, and the upper limit of the enhanced redundancy payment will be 66 weeks' pay.
