HL Deb 02 August 1982 vol 434 cc669-70WA
Lord Houghton of Sowerby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When they updated the codes on welfare of farm animals.

Earl Ferrers

The Farm Animal Welfare Council was asked to continue the work which was begun by its predecessor on the updating of the codes of recommendations for the welfare of farm animals. The council submitted revised versions of the codes for cattle and pigs to Ministers in July 1981. As a result of the statutory consultations which were undertaken, we have recently asked the Council for further advice on a few points relating to the proposed pigs code. The majority of the council's recommendations on both the cattle and pigs codes have been accepted, and the Government hope to submit the revised codes for parliamentary approval in accordance with the requirements of the Agriculture (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1968 later this year. The council submitted their proposals for revisions of the codes for domestic fowls and turkeys in June 1982. Statutory consultations on the draft revised codes were initiated earlier this month.
