§ Lord Brockwayasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they will draw the attention of the local education authority concerned to the case of the South Shields boy who has been refused admission to school because, in accordance with his parents' wishes, he has declined to be caned; and whether they will indicate that to cane a boy against the wishes of parents is contrary to the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights.
§ Lord EltonThe local education authority, South Tyneside, is aware of the circumstances of this case. The Government are carefully considering the implications of the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights on corporal punishment, and, as stated by my honourable friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in another place on 4th March, will take no action without consulting all interested parties.
