asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what were the staff numbers of the Countryside Commission as at 1 April 1982; and what were the numbers for 1 April 1979.

Dr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment in what circumstances the Countryside Commission may appoint persons from outside the Civil Service to its ranks; and whether the situation has changed since 1 April 1982.

Mr. Macfarlane

As a grant-in-aid body, the Countryside Commission has power under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to appoint staff from outside or from within the Civil Service. Prior to 1 April 1982, the Commission was staffed entirely by civil servants.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his estimate of the numbers of Countryside Commission staff currently engaged upon administrative work previously undertaken by his Department.
