HC Deb 30 October 1981 vol 10 c492W

Mr. Gordon Wilson asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will now introduce the necessary order which will make it mandatory to use lined glasses for the serving of beer and cider in licensed premises.

Mr. Biffen:

What the hon. Member probably has in mind is an order to bring into operation section 19 of the Weights and Measures Act 1979. Such an order would require that, in measuring the quantity to be served, the gas comprised in any foam on the beer or cider should be disregarded. This would not require the mandatory use of lined glasses as there are other ways of ensuring a full measure. I have decided that in present economic circumstances I would not be justified in introducing an order.
