§ Mr. George Cunningham asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners are currently held in custody in England and Wales who have been imprisoned for more than one year pending trial.
§ Mr. Mayhew [pursuant to his reply, 22 October 1981, c. 175]: Precise information can be made available only at disproportionate cost. It is estimated that on 31 August 1981 about 50 persons awaiting trial in prison department establishments in England and Wales had been remanded in custody more than 12 months earlier; some of them had spent some time on bail.
