Mr. Winnick asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what was the total number of local authority dwellings which were under construction in the West Midlands in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980; and what are the latest figures for the current year;

(2) what is the total number of local authority dwellings now under construction in the West Midlands; and where the construction is taking place.

Sir George Young:

The numbers of local authority and new town dwellings under construction in the West Midlands region were 9,076 at the end of 1979, 5,376 at the end of 1980 and 2,980 at the end of June 1981. Dwellings were under construction in all districts except Cannock Chase and Tamworth at the end of June. End-year figures for 1975 to 1978 appear in table 5 of issues 37, 41, 45 and 49 respectively, of "Local Housing Statistics": copies are available in the Library.
