HC Deb 28 October 1981 vol 10 c374W
Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will introduce measures to allow registrars, recording details of births or marriages, to accept that the past employment of anyone may be entered even if that person currently is unemployed.

Mr. Rossi:

The Registrar General's instructions to registration officers require information on occupations to be recorded in birth and marriage registers in accordance with the wishes of the birth informant or the parties married. If a person is currently unemployed, registration officers are advised to ascertain the last previous occupation: they are instructed not to enter the term "unemployed".
